Members of the RSSC comprise all Partners in the UG-GMES Consortium. This committee is chaired by the lead Applicant, the Regional Marine Centre (University of Ghana).

The Regional Marine Centre of the University of Ghana organized the 1^st Regional Steering and Coordinating Committee (RSCC) of the GMES & Africa Project – Marine & Coastal Areas Management in Western Africa.  The meeting was organized on the 31st October 2018, to officially inaugurate the Regional Steering and Coordinating Committee as well as adopt its Terms of References. Furthermore, the meeting provided partners of the Marine Consortium of the GMES & Africa Project in the ECOWAS region the opportunity to deliberate on the roles and responsibilities of partners, discuss financial matters and other matters towards successful implementation of the project.

The GMES and Africa Project on Marine and Coastal Areas Management in Western Africa has four main objectives, to:

1. Deliver 5 EO services on coastal environment and fisheries in line with: a). Provision of potential fishing zone charts overlaid with vessel traffic; b). Monitoring and forecasting of oceanography variables; c). Forecast of ocean conditions disseminated via SMS alerts d).  Generate coastal vulnerability indices; and e). Mapping of coastal habitats.
2. Strengthen competence of regional and national institutions to utilize EO services
3. Raise public awareness on the role of EO in sustainable development
4. Develop framework for promoting collaboration and access to EO data

The theme for the meeting was “Marine and Coastal Earth Observation Services for West Africa’s Blue Growth”.
